Tribute & Message From The Family

Merlin "Nick" Schuster, age 72, of Dubuque, was called home suddenly at 3:00 p.m., on Sunday, December 24, 2017, at Sartori Memorial Hospital, in Cedar Falls, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Nick's life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, December 30, 2017, at St. Anthony's Church, 1880 St. Ambrose Street, with Rev. Steven J. Rosonke officiating. To celebrate Nick's life, family and friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Friday, December 29, 2017, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where a parish scripture wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Nick was born on February 3, 1945, in Key West, Iowa, son of Clarence and Lucille (Welbes) Schuster.

Nick attended St. Joseph Grade School in Key West and then went on to graduate from Wahlert High School, Class of 1963. Nick honorably served his country as a Sargent with the U.S. Marines spending 2 years in Vietnam. After returning from his service overseas, Nick went to work in the maintenance department with the Dubuque Packing Company for 35 years, before moving on to Flexsteel and finally the Diamond Jo Casino, where he eventually retired at the age of 67. Nick would meet and marry the love of his life, Norma Konrardy Manders, and they were blessed with 41 years together and a wonderful family. Nick had a love of electronics and being quite the self taught, "tinkerer", he would spend hours in the garage work shop fixing everything from computers to reel to reel movie projectors. In his younger years, Nick could easily be found out on the river with Norma and all of his "troops", enjoying some fun in the sun. Nick was always very proud of his service with the U.S. Marines and was very involved with the Dubuque Marine Corps League, where he did a little of everything, from holding office, volunteering for fund raising events and Toys for Tots, to being a regular member of the military funeral detail. We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of our dear husband, dad, grandpa, brother and friend on Christmas Eve, but take comfort in the knowledge that Nick joined his loved ones in Heaven for the most glorious Christmas Eve Mass he's ever attended.
